Even as City and Industrial Development Cor poration (Cidco) continues with its crackdown against illegal buildings in Digha, the police have started taking action against the developers responsible.

With the cancellation of Nationalist Congress Party corporator Navin Gavte’s bail plea, the police have started a look out for him.

Assistant commissioner of police Arun Walture said, “Gavte had earlier secured anticipatory bail however after its expiry, he had been denied an extension during the second attempt.”

He said, “We are now looking out for him as he is not available.”

Asking for support from residents Walture said, “Digha residents should come forward and complain to us against those developers who have cheated them.”

“After a complaint is made, the documents given by the complainant are scrutinised. The documents are sent for verification to the department on whose land the structures have come up,” he said. “It helps us confirm which bogus documents the developer has used and we can then proceed against him accordingly.”

The high court had last year deemed 99 buildings in Digha illegal and asked them to be demolished.

Of these, five buildings have been pulled down so far and there has been a hue and cry with several people approaching the court for a stay. The court ordered formation of a special committee headed by Walture to look into the matter.

“So far cases have been registered against 51 people, of whom 26 have been arrested. We are looking for 13 people while five have taken interim bail. As for the other accused, there are issues of identification and we are looking for them too,” said Walture.
