KALYAN: Kalyan residents, who are reeling under water shortage, have got some relief.

The K al ya n-Do mb iv li Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has decided to supply water to Kalyan despite water cuts scheduled from Friday 12 noon to Sunday 12 noon. It will not supply water to Dombivli on Saturday. But, on Sunday, the two cities and the 27 villages will get water supply without any cut.

“We will follow the revised schedule from next week. On Saturday, we will supply water only to Kalyan as the area has not received water for the past six days. On Sunday, both Kalyan and Dombivli will get water,” said Tarun Juneja, KDMC deputy engineer, water department.

The six days of water shortage has hit the residents hard.

As the residents struggled to cope with the crisis which kept worsening, the KDMC decided to follow the old schedule for water from next week. As per the old schedule, KDMC will impose water cuts on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

On February 6, the civic body had announced the continuous 48-hour water cut from Friday 12noon to Sunday 12 noon.

“This week, we will try and resolve the issue by supplying water without any cut. We will switch to the old schedule next week,” added Juneja.

Since November last year, the civic started imposing water cuts in its jurisdiction on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the cities and on Fridays and Saturdays in the 27 villages which were recently added to the civic body. The change in schedule worsened the water problems. Also, Ulhas river levels dipped, forcing the KDMC to stop water supply for five days.

“We, who depend entirely on KDMC water, were the worst-hit. The previous schedule is better as it gives us the option to store water and use it on the day when water is not supplied,” said Padmaja Patil, 35, a homemaker from Tisgaon in Kalyan (East).
