The pillion rider of a bike was killed on the spot and the rider was critically injured in an accident on Sion Panvel highway near Vashi, Thursday evening. The police have arrested the truck driver.

The incident occurred at around 4.30 pm on Vashi flyover. The deceased has been identified as Marks Adhav, 25, and the injured as Saroj Chaudhary, 29.

Both worked as delivery boys for an online portal. They were heading to Mankhurd after delivering a package to a customer in Kharghar.

According to eye witnesses, the bike got caught in the cavity of the expansion joint that joins the roads on the flyover.

The expansion joint is used to absorb the heat-induced expansion and contraction of construction materials, to absorb vibration, to hold parts together.

An eyewitness said, “The rider lost balance of the bike as the tyres went over the cavity. The duo fell on the road and unfortunately for them, a speeding truck (MH04HB8184) coming from behind ran over them.”

According to Santosh Shevale, a friend of the duo, “Adhav was killed instantaneously as the truck ran over his head. Chaudhary was rushed to NMMC hospital in Vashi. Doctors have said that his condition is serious.”

Shevale said, “Adhav was married and has a son while Chaudhary is a bachelor.”

Vashi police said the truck driver has been arrested for causing death due to negligence. Further investigations are going on.

Two people died in two separate accidents on ThaneBhiwandi Road on Thursday.

The two accidents took place within 30 minutes at the same spot.
