From next year onwards, students in the city appearing for secondary and higher secondary exams will be able to travel for free in the civic buses.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has decided to make available bus tickets available for free for all students appearing for their Class 10 and 12 board exams.

The free bus tickets will however be applicable during the exam period as students already get concessional bus passes throughout the year.

Officials from the transport department said the benefit will be given to all students irrespective of whether they are from civic schools or private schools.

“We will start providing the bus tickets for free to students from next academic year. The step is specially going to be useful for those students whose examination centre is far and they have to shell out extra money on auto. The motive behind this is to help students as well as encourage them to travel by NMMT buses,” said Sabu Daniel, chairman, Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport.

Officials said the students will have to show their hall tickets and can travel free of cost.

Students will also be allowed to board from the front door when they travel during the examination time so as to help them reach their exam centres on time. “We have been taking initiatives for the better service to our commuters and to urge more people to use the civic buses,” said the official.
