Watch Chen­nai troupe stage Tamil play to­day

VASHI: If you are a theatre lover, get ready for an emo­tion­ally charged mu­si­cal play packed with mov­ing es­says from the life of and works of saint com­poser Thya­garaja.

Vashi Fine Arts So­ci­ety (VF AS) will stage Shri Thya­gara­jar di­rected by Shri TV Vard­hara­jan and his troupe on March 13 at 10.30am at Cidco Ex­hi­bi­tion Cen­tre Au­di­to­rium.

The 2 hours and 15 min­utes play with 40 songs will be per­formed for the first time in Navi Mum­bai.

The troupe from Chen­nai has a team of 25 mem­bers with 13 men and four women artistes.

The di­rec­tor and lead per­former of the play, 62- year- old Shri TV Vard­hara­jan said this would be the se­cond per­for­mance play in Mum­bai in a month.

“The play was in­au­gu­rated in De­cem­ber last year in Chen­nai and has al­ready been per­formed 20 times across In­dia. This will be our 21st per­for­mance and we are ea­gerly look­ing for­ward to stage our mag­num opus mu­si­cal drama Shri Thya­gara­jar in Navi Mum­bai and ex­pect­ing a warm and the­atri­cally in­clined au­di­ence,” said Vard­hara­jan.

Or­gan­is­ers said the com­pre­hen­sive fam­ily drama pro­vides an in­sight into the real life of the saint poet, high­light­ing his de­vo­tion to Lord Rama and his strug­gles in life.

Kan­nan Iyer, trea­surer of VFAS, said, “The com­po­si­tion of the story delves into the per­sona of the man who has com­posed in­nu­mer­able soul­ful songs in praise of Lord Rama.”
