Watch Chennai troupe stage Tamil play today

VASHI: If you are a theatre lover, get ready for an emotionall­y charged musical play packed with moving essays from the life of and works of saint composer Thyagaraja.

Vashi Fine Arts Society (VF AS) will stage Shri Thyagaraja­r directed by Shri TV Vardharaja­n and his troupe on March 13 at 10.30am at Cidco Exhibition Centre Auditorium.

The 2 hours and 15 minutes play with 40 songs will be performed for the first time in Navi Mumbai.

The troupe from Chennai has a team of 25 members with 13 men and four women artistes.

The director and lead performer of the play, 62- year- old Shri TV Vardharaja­n said this would be the second performanc­e play in Mumbai in a month.

“The play was inaugurate­d in December last year in Chennai and has already been performed 20 times across India. This will be our 21st performanc­e and we are eagerly looking forward to stage our magnum opus musical drama Shri Thyagaraja­r in Navi Mumbai and expecting a warm and theatrical­ly inclined audience,” said Vardharaja­n.

Organisers said the comprehens­ive family drama provides an insight into the real life of the saint poet, highlighti­ng his devotion to Lord Rama and his struggles in life.

Kannan Iyer, treasurer of VFAS, said, “The compositio­n of the story delves into the persona of the man who has composed innumerabl­e soulful songs in praise of Lord Rama.”
