1 from gang that stole gold worth ` 50L held

NERUL: Police have succeeded in arresting a member of a gang that alle gedly trailed and looted jewellers.

The arrest was made possible by a name written on a steel bowl found in a plastic bag that the gang had left behind after a loot.

The gang had reportedly looted Rs 50 lakh worth of gold jewellery following which the Nerul police started an investigat­ion.

Mahesh Kumar Bafna has a jewellery business in Nerul. The jewellery made by him is sold to various shops in the villages of the state.

According to deputy com- missioner of police Shahji Umap, “A jeweller in Nanded had given an order to Bafna following which two of his employees on February 21 had gone to Nanded. They had taken 2,100g of gold jewellery with them, out of which some were to be given to the jeweler while others were samples for future orders.”

He added, “After giving 300gm to the jeweler, the duo were retur ning to Mumbai with the rest of the jewellery when near Kej, they halted at a restaurant to eat. It was then that the unidentifi­ed men had stolen the 1800g jewellery from them.”

A complaint about the incident was registered at Nerul police station.
