1 from gang that stole gold worth ` 50L held

NERUL: Po­lice have suc­ceeded in ar­rest­ing a mem­ber of a gang that alle gedly trailed and looted jew­ellers.

The ar­rest was made pos­si­ble by a name writ­ten on a steel bowl found in a plas­tic bag that the gang had left be­hind af­ter a loot.

The gang had re­port­edly looted Rs 50 lakh worth of gold jew­ellery fol­low­ing which the Nerul po­lice started an in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

Ma­hesh Ku­mar Bafna has a jew­ellery busi­ness in Nerul. The jew­ellery made by him is sold to var­i­ous shops in the vil­lages of the state.

Ac­cord­ing to deputy com- mis­sioner of po­lice Shahji Umap, “A jew­eller in Nanded had given an or­der to Bafna fol­low­ing which two of his em­ploy­ees on Fe­bru­ary 21 had gone to Nanded. They had taken 2,100g of gold jew­ellery with them, out of which some were to be given to the jew­eler while oth­ers were sam­ples for fu­ture or­ders.”

He added, “After giv­ing 300gm to the jew­eler, the duo were re­tur ning to Mum­bai with the rest of the jew­ellery when near Kej, they halted at a restau­rant to eat. It was then that the uniden­ti­fied men had stolen the 1800g jew­ellery from them.”

A com­plaint about the in­ci­dent was reg­is­tered at Nerul po­lice sta­tion.
