NAVI MUMBAI: In a bid to ensure transparency in the system, the solid waste management department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will take pictures before and after the nullah cleaning work.

The officials said they would take photos of 10 major nullahs that discharge storm water into the creek area. After completion of the clean-up, they will again take photos.

“The NMMC carries out an annual pre-monsoon cleaning work to ensure that small drains and the 10 major nullahs are cleaned and made silt-free before the monsoon,” said Tushar Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner, solid waste management department, NMMC.

The official said despite the efforts there have been allegations that the work is not carried out and so they have decided to take pictures of the before and after the cleaning work.

“The pictures will be mostly taken with the help of GPS. We will focus mainly on the major 10 big nullahs in the city. However we are yet to finalise the bid. If all goes as per plan, we will use GPS. If we are unable to use the GPS system, we will ask photographers to take photos,” said Pawar.

Meanwhile, the Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) has also begun the nullah-cleaning work as part of its pre-monsoon drive. To bring in transparency in the work, officials from PMC have decided to video-shoot the cleaning of the nullahs.

PMC covers around 50 kms area which majorly includes the old Panvel area.

Several parts of Panvel are lowlying areas which was the worsthit in the 2005 deluge. This was because of clogged nullah which led to waterlogging.

The PMC constructed around 14 nullahs to drain out the water.

“We receive complaints during monsoon that the nullah-cleaning work has not been done properly by contractors. Sometimes, contractors clean only a part of the drain.

Hence, we will record the cleaning work so that there is evidence against the contractors and they will also do the work properly, bringing in transparency,” said Mangesh Chitale, chief officer of Panvel Municipal Council.
