Man, his mother held for try­ing to kill wife

A 30-year-old man and his mother were ar­rested on Satur­day for al­legedly ha­rass­ing his wife and at­tempt­ing to mur­der her.

Sub­hangi Chan­dra, 28, was be­ing ha­rassed by her hus­band Rensu, a gym trainer, and her mother-in-law Ratna, 56, a teacher in a pri­vate school, for the past sev­eral months.

Rensu al­legedly had an ex­tra­mar­i­tal af­fair with a woman from Mankhurd and he would meet her reg­u­larly.

“Af­ter Sub­hangi learnt about it, she started com­plain­ing and this led to fre­quent quar­rels be­tween the cou­ple. The two started tor­tur­ing her phys­i­cally and men­tally. At times, they even asked her to get money from her par­ents,” said a po­lice of­fi­cer from Kopar Khairane po­lice sta­tion.

“On Thurs­day, they had a quar­rel over the same is­sue and two tried to kill her by throt­tling her. Sub­hangi suf­fered se­vere in­juries and she has been ad­mit­ted to a pri­vate hos­pi­tal in the city. She is yet to be dis­charged,” the of­fi­cer said.

Fol­low­ing an FIR reg­is­tered by Sub­hangi’s fam­ily, the po­lice ar­rested Ratna and Rensu on Satur­day. They have been booked un­der sec­tions 498a, 406, 307, 506, 508 and 34 of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC).

Ac­cord­ing to sources from the Navi Mum­bai women as­sis­tant cell, the po­lice re­ceived over 650 com­plaints do­mes­tic vi­o­lence be­tween Jan­uary 2015 and April this year. A ma­jor­ity of the cases were re­lated to fight over dowry de­mand by hus­band and in-laws.
