A 30-year-old man and his mother were arrested on Saturday for allegedly harassing his wife and attempting to murder her.

Subhangi Chandra, 28, was being harassed by her husband Rensu, a gym trainer, and her mother-in-law Ratna, 56, a teacher in a private school, for the past several months.

Rensu allegedly had an extramarital affair with a woman from Mankhurd and he would meet her regularly.

“After Subhangi learnt about it, she started complaining and this led to frequent quarrels between the couple. The two started torturing her physically and mentally. At times, they even asked her to get money from her parents,” said a police officer from Kopar Khairane police station.

“On Thursday, they had a quarrel over the same issue and two tried to kill her by throttling her. Subhangi suffered severe injuries and she has been admitted to a private hospital in the city. She is yet to be discharged,” the officer said.

Following an FIR registered by Subhangi’s family, the police arrested Ratna and Rensu on Saturday. They have been booked under sections 498a, 406, 307, 506, 508 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to sources from the Navi Mumbai women assistant cell, the police received over 650 complaints domestic violence between January 2015 and April this year. A majority of the cases were related to fight over dowry demand by husband and in-laws.
