Traf­fic vi­o­la­tions up by 2,000 in Kopar Khairane this year

Due to ex­ten­sive drives taken by the traf­fic de­part­ment, the num­ber traf­fic vi­o­la­tion cases has in­creased by over 2,000 in Kopar Khairane this year.

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, the traf­fic po­lice pe­nalised around 6,800 peo­ple for vi­o­lat­ing the norms like not wear­ing seat belts and hel­met, sig­nal jump­ing, rash driv­ing, il­le­gal park­ing till July 27 in 2015. The num­ber of cases reg­is­tered till Wed­nes­day (July 27) this year is 8,835.

AK Agivli, traf­fic in­spec­tor from Kopar Khairane, said, “We tried to cre­ate aware­ness about road safety among the masses through var­i­ous pro­grammes at the be­gin­ning of this year. After that we started tak­ing mas­sive drive against dif­fer­ent vi­o­la­tions.”

“Of­fi­cials were de­ployed at dif­fer­ent places and were asked to take ac­tion each and ev­ery­one who is found to vi­o­late a sin­gle norm. It has been ob­served that most of the ac­ci­dent vic­tims in Navi Mum­bai die be­cause of head in­juries. There­fore we are go­ing tough on the bik­ers with­out hel­met. A ma­jor­ity of the cases we reg­is­tered Po­lice of­fi­cials were de­ployed at dif­fer­ent places, like this at Vashi, to check for mo­torists flout­ing rules.

Arvind Salve, deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (traf­fic) said, “Not only in Kopar Khairane, we in­structed all 15 units in our ju­ris­dic­tion to take ac­tion against as many vi­o­la­tors as pos­si­ble in the be­gin­ning of the year. We think it re­sulted in in­crease of the to­tal num­ber of cases in some ar­eas.”

The traf­fic po­lice are also con­duct­ing drives with­out

any prior an­nounce­ments in the busy junc­tions such as Teen Tanki and D-Mart junc­tions at Kopar Khairane, Blue Di­a­mond chowk at Vashi, Cidco Bha­van Chowk at Be­la­pur and Hi­ranan­dani Chowk at Kharghar among oth­ers.

Agivli said, “As far as our area is con­cerned, il­le­gal park­ing a ma­jor is­sue. Apart from pe­nal­iz­ing the vi­o­la­tors we are also try­ing to get so­lu­tions of the is­sues dis­cussing with NMMC.”
