Traffic violations up by 2,000 in Kopar Khairane this year

Due to extensive drives taken by the traffic department, the number traffic violation cases has increased by over 2,000 in Kopar Khairane this year.

According to the police, the traffic police penalised around 6,800 people for violating the norms like not wearing seat belts and helmet, signal jumping, rash driving, illegal parking till July 27 in 2015. The number of cases registered till Wednesday (July 27) this year is 8,835.

AK Agivli, traffic inspector from Kopar Khairane, said, “We tried to create awareness about road safety among the masses through various programmes at the beginning of this year. After that we started taking massive drive against different violations.”

“Officials were deployed at different places and were asked to take action each and everyone who is found to violate a single norm. It has been observed that most of the accident victims in Navi Mumbai die because of head injuries. Therefore we are going tough on the bikers without helmet. A majority of the cases we registered Police officials were deployed at different places, like this at Vashi, to check for motorists flouting rules.

Arvind Salve, deputy commission­er of police (traffic) said, “Not only in Kopar Khairane, we instructed all 15 units in our jurisdicti­on to take action against as many violators as possible in the beginning of the year. We think it resulted in increase of the total number of cases in some areas.”

The traffic police are also conducting drives without

any prior announceme­nts in the busy junctions such as Teen Tanki and D-Mart junctions at Kopar Khairane, Blue Diamond chowk at Vashi, Cidco Bhavan Chowk at Belapur and Hiranandan­i Chowk at Kharghar among others.

Agivli said, “As far as our area is concerned, illegal parking a major issue. Apart from penalizing the violators we are also trying to get solutions of the issues discussing with NMMC.”
