Two civic officials among three injured in Belapur accident

Three people, including two civic officials, were injured after the SUV they were travelling in was hit by a dumper at Belapur sector 21 on Saturday.

The impact of the accident was such that the SUV hit a stationary truck. The car was completely damaged.

According to the police, the three were travelling towards sector 22.

Around 1pm, they stopped at traffic signal near the Income Tax Colony.

“The speeding dumper, which was also moving in the same direction, hit the SUV from behind. The car then swerved ahead and crashed into a truck which was also waiting at the signal. All the three people travelling in the car suffered injuries,” said a police officer from Belapur police station.

The injured have been identified as Yashwant Desai, 40, Balkrishna Vare, 37, and Vishwash Kolkar, 35.

They were taken to NMMC hospital in Vashi and are recuperati­ng.

The dumper driver fled the spot after the accident, leaving behind the vehicle. The police are yet to arrest him.

The police have registered a case against the driver under sections 279, 337, 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 134 of the Motor Vehicle Act against him.

“Since we have seized the dumper and also got its registrati­on number, it will not be difficult to trace the driver,” another police officer said.

"We have sent our officials to look for him and he will be in our custody soon. We also trying to find out if it is a case of drink driving," he added.
