Maha inches closer to 75K cases, sees 122 more deaths

MUMBAI: Maharashtr­a on Wednesday inched closer to the grim 75,000 Covid-19 cases mark with 2,560 more infections, bringing the case count to 74,860 — 34.55% of the total cases (2,16,677) in the country.

Of the state’s tally, 38,493 are active cases, according to the state health department.

The state also reported 122 deaths on Wednesday, highest in a day so far, taking the toll to 2,587. However, of theses, 57 deaths are from the past two days, while the rest are from between April 30 and May 31.

Last Friday, the state had recorded 116 fatalities, which was the second-highest single-day figure. However, the government had clarified that 70 of them were from the previous 13 days.

Of the total deaths reported on Wednesday, 49 are in Mumbai, 19 in Pune, 16 in Aurangabad, 10 in Solapur, four in Dhule , three each in Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, two each in Thane, Kolhapur, Akola and one each in MiraBhayan­der, Vasai-Virar, Bhiwandi, Ahmednagar, Nandurbar, Jalna and Osmanabad. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal died in Mumbai.

While 69 of those who died were above 60 years of age, 46 were in the age group of 40 to 59 years and the remaining seven were below the age of 40 years.

Of the deceased, 88 had highrisk co-morbiditie­s, including diabetes, hypertensi­on and heart ailments, health officials said.

Statistics showed that the state has reported 1,452 deaths in the past 18 days. This is more than 56% of the total deaths and an average of 80 deaths a day.

The mortality rate in the state has slightly increased, too, to 3.45% (2,587 deaths on June 2) from 3.27% (1,792 deaths on May 26). This is more than the national mortality rate, which is 2.80%, with 6,005 deaths till Wednesday, stated the data shared by the Maharashtr­a medical education department.
