Jamil’s NorthEast ends Mumbai City’s run

MUMBAI: In back-to-back games earlier this month against Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City FC struck a couple of early blows that effectively killed the game in the first quarter. On Saturday, they got a taste of their own medicine.

With two goals just nine minutes into the game, NorthEast United FC left a dominant Mumbai team shell-shocked. And with that they handed Sergio Lobera’s men a 2-1 defeat, their second of this Indian Super League (ISL) season, which halted Mumbai’s recordequalling 12-match unbeaten streak that started with their second game of the season on November 25. NorthEast had also beaten Mumbai in the teams’ previous meeting in the early stage of the league.

But while that was a scratchy 1-0 win, this was a rousing statement by an inspired NorthEast outfit under interim coach Khalid Jamil. Turning their fortunes around after the mid-season sacking of coach Gerard Nus, NorthEast have now won three matches on the trot to sneak into the top four.

Jamaican forward Deshorn Brown was the star for NorthEast, scoring in the sixth and ninth minutes. Substitute Adam le Fondre struck in the 85th minute to pull one back for the table-toppers late in the game.
