THANE: After almost 120 hours, the work of laying the girders near Mumbra Bypass was completed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) on Friday morning.

The lane has now been opened for vehicles both the directions as the final phase of laying girders for the ThaneDiva fifth and sixth lines has been completed. This was initially supposed to be a 24-hour block on Sunday but technical glitches led to delay in the work.

“These were heavy girders weighing 350 tons and 75m long. The technical snag in pulling and placing the girder at the apt spot led to the delay. It has been completed successfully and now the process of laying tracks and building the bridge will be completed. MRVC and Central Railway will undertake blocks to connect the railway lines with Thane, Diva and Mumbra yards,” said a senior official from MRVC.

The traffic movement from Mumbra to Kharegaon in Kalwa was closed from Monday, however it has been let open today and this will ease the traffic problems in the vicinity as well. “We have contributed by monitoring the traffic situation. It took a lot of coordination and involvement of various authorities to manage traffic,” said Balasaheb Patil, DCP (Traffic), Thane.

After 13 years, MRVC has nearly completed the laying of fifth and sixth line project that will help include an additional 100 local trains between CSMT and Kalyan. The estimated cost of the project has now increased from ₹130Cr to ₹440Cr now.
