KALYAN: Several residents in Kalyan protested against the bad roads and potholes in KalyanDombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) jurisdiction on Thursday, forcing the authorities to start fixing the roads.

A few residents also sat on the road in protest, holding banners that asked residents to send messages or make calls to KDMC with complaints.

From Wednesday morning, the residents started sending messages and making phone calls to the corporation. By noon, the KDMC responded and on Thursday morning, the repair work has also been initiated in these areas.

In a unique initiative, the residents of Rambaug and Bethurkar pada sent messages and made calls to KDMC complaining about pothole-ridden roads. “From every household, we requested at least one person to either make a phone call or message on WhatsApp regarding the bad condition of roads in the vicinity. Within an hour, we got a message from the commissioner assuring that the work will be completed at the earliest. Until people unite and demand such actions, the corporation will not be on their toes,” said Chetan Mhamunkar, 35, resident of Bethurkar Pada.

A senior KDMC officer said, “We have started filling the potholes after receiving more than 100 messages or calls from locals in Gaothan areas and near Kala Talao. Currently, we are waiting for a dry spell to complete the road repair work in these areas. Before the start of the monsoon, we completed the road repair work in most areas. We continue to fill potholes now as well.”

Rashi Garodia, 36, of Dombivli, said, “In Dombivli and Thakurli, there are roads with many craters and potholes. It is difficult to drive through these roads as the deep potholes are filled with water in the monsoon.”
