BHIWANDI: A 50-year-old man died and six others were injured after a portion of the ground and a load-bearing structure located at Azminagar slum in Bhiwandi, collapsed at around 10am on Friday. All of them were passing by when the collapse occurred. The deceased was identified as Rajak Ansari.

As per the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC), the residential structure is dangerous. However, it is not listed as one by the civic body. The structure is located near a busy vegetable market.

The six injured were taken to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Two were later shifted to another hospital in Sion and one was discharged after treatment. The six injured included two women and a girl, 14.

“None of the residents of the house died or suffered injuries in the incident. The victims are those who were walking near the house when the incident occurred. The family of five was sleeping on the ground floor during the collapse,” said Israr Ansari, 30, who lives in another house next to the collapsed structure.

“My sister Zara went to the market to buy vegetables and the structure collapsed. As some portions fell on her, she suffered injuries on her back,” said Jamal Ansari, 24, brother of one of the injured.

“The structure is dangerous, however it is not listed as one. The entire area has several such dangerous structures. We have asked the nearby residents to move out for safety reasons,” said Sudhakar Deshmukh, commissioner, BNCMC.

The local police and Bhiwandi disaster management team that reached the spot have initiated the demolition of the structure.
