THANE: In light of the ongoing Ganeshotsav and the recent arrests of six terror accused from various parts of the country including Mumbai, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) of Thane Police has started random checks at all major immersion points in its jurisdiction.

Following the recent developments and their proximity to the Thane city, a decision was taken to step up anti-terror measures.

“We have instructed our BDDS to conduct thorough checks at all major immersion points, where Ganesha idols will be immersed by a large number of people. These will be surprise checks conducted on a random basis every day and will go on till the Ganeshotsav is over,” ACP (Crime), Ashok Morale, Thane Police, said.

As per TMC data, there are seven immersion points in Thane with two at Kalwa and one each at Parsik Retibunder, Kolshet, Chendani Koliwada in Kopri and Diva. Additionally, artificial ponds have also been created at Masunda, Kharegaon, New Shivaji Nagar, Kalwa, Wagle Estate, Upvan, Balkum and Kavesar. Detailed searches were conducted at several of these immersion points on Thursday and Friday.

Morale said that while the immersion points would be the primary focus of the BDDS’ checks, similar checks would also be conducted at all vital installations in the city as well as any other spot where large crowds gather.

“We are also watching the internet closely. Any attempts to create unnecessary panic among the people by spreading baseless rumours on social media will be dealt with swift and strict action on our part,” he said.
