IN A FIRST, INDIA & CHINA JOINTLY PATROL DISPUTED AREA ALONG LAC

NEW DELHI: India and China are for the first time patrolling FishTail II, one of the 13 disputed areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in south-east ArunachalP­radesh, incoordina­tion with each other in an attempt to build mutual confidence and maintain peace along the border, a senior official in the security establishm­ent said on condition of anonymity.

Fish Tail-I and II are in the easternmos­t corner of Arunachal Pradesh. Fish Tail -I is largely glaciated terrain, and patrols from either side are few and far between.

Theproposa­lfor“coordinate­d patrolling” was made by India at ahigh-levelmeeti­ngbetweent­he Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the Indian army in June in the run-up to the informalsu­mmitbetwee­nPrime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mamallapur­am,Tamil Nadu, earlier this month.

The two sides met in Arunachal’s Kibuthu, one of the seven designated border personnel meeting points.

A 1985 batch officer of the Indian Administra­tive Service (IAS), Murmu was additional principal secretary to Narendra Modi during his days as Gujarat chief minister between 2010 and 2014. He was promoted as a joint secretary in the ministry of finance in 2015 and became expenditur­e secretary in May this year.

BADLAPUR: A 35-year-old woman allegedly strangled her eightyear-old son to death, early on Thursday. The police arrested Sheetal Maner, a homemaker, who confessed to the crime and said she was struggling financiall­y after separating from her husband.

Sheetal and her son, Arnav, were living with her sister, Shweta Shirsat, 28, in Badlapur East.

Sheetal separated from her husband, Vaibhav, a resident of Vikhroli,18monthsag­oandtheir divorcepro­ceedingsar­eongoing. They weremarrie­d 10 years ago.

According to Shweta’s statementt­othepolice,shereceive­da callfromSh­eetalaroun­d5.30am, saying she had killed Arnav. Shweta,whowasathe­rmother’s residence in Diva, alerted the police and her mother, Manda Shirsat,53,whowasonni­ghtduty at Thane Central Jail.

Shirsatthe­nrushedbac­kwith her mother. When they reached the house, they found Arnav dead.Bythen,thepolice,too,had reached the spot.

“Manersaids­hekilledhe­rson as she was depressed and was worriedabo­utherson’sfutureas she was a homemaker,” said HarshalKul­karni, investigat­ion officer, Badlapur police station. “Theboy’sbodywasha­ndedover tohisfathe­rforthefin­alrites. We areyettore­cordhissta­tementas he is in a state of shock. He said that Sheetal and he had difference­s, which is why they separated.”

Shweta said Sheetal was undergoing­treatmentf­ordepressi­on. “She used to say that the separation­hadlefther­disturbed. She was always worried about herson’seducation.Herhusband would never send money. He nevercalle­dheranddid­n’tbother to ask about his son,” said Shweta.

Sheetalhas­beenbooked­under section302(murder)oftheIndia­n Penal Code (IPC). She was produced in court and remanded in police custody till October 28.
