Mumbai sees over 1,400 new cases after 36 days; state tally is 657,450

MUMBAI: The state recorded 14,161 new Covid-19 infections, the second-highest single-day spike in Maharashtr­a after 14,492 cases on Thursday, pushing up its tally to 657,450.

The toll touched 21,698 with 339 deaths reported on Friday. Cases rose in Mumbai, too, as it crossed the 1,400 mark after 36 days, to report 1,406 new infections, taking the city’s tally to 134,228. The city had recorded 1,476 cases on July 16.

Of the state’s 339 fatalities, 260 were reported in the past two days, 48 over the past week and the remaining 31 were from the period before it, according to the state health department. Of the fatalities reported on Friday, 81 were in Pune district (42 in city, 21 in rural parts and 18 in PimpriChin­chwad), 42 in Mumbai, 15 in Nagpur city, 11 each in Navi Mumbai and Palghar rural. The case fatality rate (CFR) of the state stood at 3.30%.

Pune district continued to remain on top in the cases and fatality chart with 3,394 cases in a day. Of them, Pune City reported 1,692 cases, while Pune Rural saw 756 cases and PimpriChin­chwad reported 946 cases.

Pune district has the highest number of active patients at 41,326.

State’s recovery rate touched 71.62%, as 11,749 more patients recovered on Friday, taking the total number of recovered patients to 470,873. National recovery rate is 73.91%.

The state has 164,562 active Covid-19 patients as of Friday.

Maharashtr­a also has 1192,685 people under home quarantine, while 35,132 are institutio­nally quarantine­d across the state.
