CONG MP DIES AFTER FAINTING DURING BHARAT JODO YATRA

LUDHIANA/JALANDHAR: Leaders across party lines expressed shock and grief over the sudden death of Congress lawmaker Santokh Singh Chaudhary on Saturday after he collapsed while participat­ing in the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Saturday. He was 76.

The two-term Jalandhar MP suffered cardiac arrest during the foot march at Phillaur in Jalandhar. He was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The Congress suspended the ongoing yatra for 24 hours as a mark of respect for the MP.

Sharing pictures of Chaudhary walking with him, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who visited the grieving family, tweeted: “Shocked by the sudden demise of Santokh Singh Chaudhary. He was a hardworkin­g and down to earth gentleman.” Former Congress president and UPA chairperso­n Sonia Gandhi wrote a letter to Chaudhary’s wife Kamaljeet Kaur, saying she was saddened to learn of Chaudhary’s demise.

MUMBAI: The police on Saturday booked former Mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar and four others for alleged cheating and forgery in connection with the Slum Rehabilita­tion Authority’s (SRA) Gomata Janata project in Lower Parel.

SRA officer Uday Pingale, in his complaint filed at Nirmal Nagar police station, said as per records, Pednekar was not a slum unit owner, and she was never allotted one. However, when she filed her nomination for the BMC election in 2017, she gave her home address as house number 601, building no. 2, Gomata Janata SRA CHS Limited, Pingale alleged.
