Unhappy with family hostility, 17-year-old hangs herself

MUMBAI: A minor girl is suspected to have committed suicide at her Santacruz (East) residence on Tuesday as her parents allegedly disapproved of her being in a relationship. Police said the victim, a 17-year-old Muslim girl, had reportedly eloped with a 22-year-old Hindu boy two months ago.

The girl’s family was aware about the relationship and had approached the Vakola police. The police had traced the boy to Solapur using his mobile location.

“The couple was brought to the city and the boy was arrested on charges of rape and kidnapping as the victim was minor. The girl was not ready to live with her parents. As she was a minor, she was sent to a children’s remand home,” said a police officer of the Vakola police station. The girl was then brought home as she was unwell.

“The girl was upset because her parents did not allow her to go out. She was also suffering from tuberculosis and was undergoing treatment for last few weeks,” the officer added.

“She hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her residence around 7am on Tuesday. Her mother was in the other room, while her father was out for work. When her mother came into the room, she found her hanging from the fan and alerted her family members and neighbours,” said Sachin Gawade, sub inspector at Vakola police station.

The girl was rushed to the VN Desai hospital, where she was declared dead before admission. “We have not found a suicide note. The accidental death report has been registered and investigation is on from all possible angles,”
