He clearly outlined India’s strat egy for the 10-day-long summit saying the developed world should provide easy access to cleaner tech nologies, climate finance and right to carbon space. “India’s progress is our destiny and right of our peo ple. But we must also lead in com bating climate change,” he said.

In an article that he wrote for the Financial Times, Modi asked advanced countries to “assume more responsibi­lities” and provide “affordable cleaner technologi­es” to the developing world. The PM also launched the Internatio­nal Solar Alliance of over 100 coun tries in the presence of French President Francois Hollande and described it as a “dream come true”. “This day is the sunrise of new hope – not just for clean energy but for villages and homes still in darkness,” he said “Convergenc­e between economy ecology and energy shall define our future.” He sought the resolu tion of the intellectu­al rights issue in the transfer of cleaner technolo gies at the Innovation Mission hosted by US President Barack Obama, with other heads of state and industry leaders such as Bill Gates and Ratan Tata among those present. Modi said equity and com mon but differenti­ated responsi bility should be the bedrock of all elements of the proposed deal. He also called for the continuati­on of convention­al energy sources such as coal and said there cannot be any place for unilateral steps that can hinder the growth of develop ing countries.
