HOW THE POLICE FORMED SPECIAL TEAMS TO PROBE DOUBLE MURDERS

MUMBAI: Soon after the bodies of artist Hema Upadhyay and Haresh Bhambani were identi fied on Sunday, senior police officials roped in detection officers – some formerly with the crime branch – from various police stations around Kandivli to probe the double murder.

Police inspector Deepak Phatangare, an old hand of the Mumbai crime branch, was asked to lead the team. He briefed around 10 police officials on the line of investigat­ion. These policemen then roped in consta bles from Kandivli and nearby police stations for the probe.

One of these teams traced the first suspect – Shivkumar Rajbhar – within a few hours of learning about his possible involvemen­t in the murders.

A team of five policemen was dispatched to Uttar Pradesh where they arrested Shivkumar along with a team from the UP special task force on Monday Shivkumar told the police about the alleged role of prime sus pect Vidhyadhar Rajbhar, who remains at large.

Meanwhile, tempo driv er Vijaykumar Rajbhar approached the police and said he had dumped two large boxes in a drain in Kandivli the day before the bodies were found there.

He said he did not know what they contained at the time and only learnt about the crime from the next day’s papers. He was detained at first before being formally arrested on Tuesday morning.
