NCRB report: Most commit suicides due to family problems
NEW DELHI: Family problems are one of the biggest causes for committing suicide in India. In 2014, 18,623 men and 9,977 women committed suicide due to family problems. Another major reason was illness due to which 23,746 people killed themselves.
Minister of state for home Haribhai Chaudhary gave the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data with regard to suicides in the country to Lok Sabha on Tuesday. “Major causes of suicide are family problems, illness, drug abuse, bankruptcy or sudden change in economic status,” the minister said.
In 2014, in total 1,31,666 people committed suicide while the suicide figures for 2012 and 2013 stood at 1,20,488 and 1,34,799 respectively. Due to marriage related issues like, non-settlement of marriage, dowry related issues, extra-marital affairs or divorce 6,773 people killed them selves in 2014. Due to illness like aids, cancer, paralysis or mental illness, 25,116 (2012), 26,426 (2013) and 23,746 (2014) people commit ted suicide in the last three years respectively.
Bankruptcy or indebtedness caused 2,308 (2014), 2,678 (2013) and 2,374 (2014) persons to com mittee suicide respectively in the last three years. Failure in examination (2,403), drug abuse (3,647) and love affairs (4,168) were found to be other major reasons for committing suicide in 2014.
Love affairs were mentioned as reasons for suicide in 3,849 and 4,495 cases in 2012 and 2013 respectively as well.
From 2014, the NCRB is keep ing data with regard to trans gender community as well. Last year, 16 transgender people com mitted suicide. Out of them five committed suicide due to illness
