Brain-dead 10-year-old’s organs save 4 lives

A statement released by the hospital said boy had been on dialysis for the past four years. However, he was only wait-listed in April. The girl had been wait-listed since 2012.

The boy’s heart was transplanted into a 25-year-old woman suffering from a fatal heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy.

The boy’s liver was transplanted into a 43-year-old Borivli resident at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where the donor had also been admitted.

“The recipient had a hepatitis B infection, a long history of jaundice and other life-threatening infections. He was very weak and the boy’s liver came in just in time for him,” said Dr Vinay Kumaran, head of liver transplant, KDAH.

“Liver tissue has the ability to regenerate, so one can transplant a paediatric liver into an adult,” he added.

According to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), this was the 34th cadaver donation this year and the sixth for this month.

ZTCC officials said the number of cadaver donations this year has increased compared to the same time last year.

“This year, we have already recorded more than half of last year’s donations,” an official said.
