Students want ‘fair scores’ after tough NEET

- Shreya Bhandary

MUMBAI: A day after over 4.3 lakh medical and dental aspirants across the country appeared for the second phase of National Entrance-cum-eligibility Test (NEET), students are anxious.

Many are worried that the difference in level of difficulty between the two NEET examinations might affect the overall scores, and are hoping that Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will normalise scores before the results.

“Many students who appeared for both phases said the first phase was easier than the Sunday test. This will be unfair to many of us who only appeared for the second phase,” said a student.

The Supreme Court order making NEET compulsory for admissions to medical and dental institutes was given on April 28, giving students little time to prepare for the exam on May 1.

Since this is the first time that NEET was held in two phases, students are not sure what to expect.

“Even in case of admissions to management institutes, scores of Common Admission Test (CAT) are normalised to ensure fairness in the scoring process as there are more than one entrance exams. Why not implement something similar for NEET,” said Rajesh Jain, state coordinator for Parents’ Association for Medical Students.

He added that the government should take this stand with the CBSE that conducted the NEET examination to avoid disparity in any form. “With only a handful of seats available in medical and dental institutes across the state, a single mark changes our ranks,” said another student from Pune.

Students and parents are planning to write to state education minister Vinod Tawde to bring this to his notice.
