IMD forecasts sporadic showers on Sunday
MUMBAI: The city received steady rain for the second straight day on Saturday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon was active over north Konkan, including Mumbai, Saurashtra and Kutch.
Between 8.30am and 8.30pm, IMD recorded 30mm of rain at the Colaba weather station and 15.9mm at Santacruz. Between 8.30am on Friday and 8.30am on Saturday, Colaba received 106mm of rain and Santacruz 57.2mm.
Under the IMD’S new classification, 15.6mm to 64.4mm of rain is termed ‘moderate’ and 2.5mm to 15.5mm ‘light’.
“Monsoon conditions have improved. Southerly winds are seen over the Arabian Sea, and an upper air cyclonic circulation is also seen over central India,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, IMD.
IMD has forecast intermittent showers on Sunday.
As on Friday, day temperatures remained four degrees below normal at both weather stations. The maximum temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius at Colaba and 26 degrees Celsius at Santacruz. Minimum temperatures in south Mumbai and the suburbs stood at 24 degrees Celsius.
Moisture levels remained, high with Colaba and Santacruz recording 95% and 92% humidity, respectively. Since June 1, the suburbs have received 2,087mm of rainfall while south Mumbai has received 1,666.8mm. The city’s average rainfall between June and September is 2,258 mm.
