NAVI MUMBAI: In light of rising cases of harassment of students from India’s noth-eastern states, the state government plans to appoint an officer to address their problems in the city.

The officer will handle all trouble, from locals to the police or any other department. State education minister Vinod Tawde made the announcement during a programme dedicated to songs and dances from the northeastern states in Vashi on Saturday. “Such an officer will ensure students can study and work without any obstacle.”

“We have several things to learn from the north-east. We talk about equality of women in cities, but in the matriarchal societies of the north-east, women have better social positions ,” the minister said. On the importance of these states, Tawde said: According to vastu sashtra, the northeastern part is the most important place of any home. These states are our strength.”

“After Delhi, Maharashtra is the second state where a large number of northeastern students are studying,” the minister said.
