50-year-old dies in hit-and-run while crossing highway

MUMBAI: A 50-year-old man died while undergoing treatment at VN Desai hospital after he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on the Western Express Highway (WEH) on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Mistrilal Harijan.

According to officers from Vakola police station, the accident occurred at 9.40pm on the northbound stretch of the WEH, opposite Davri Nagar gate no 5. Harijan was crossing the road with his younger sister Siyama (45), when he was run over by a motorist who fled the spot.

He lived in Davri Nagar with his brother and undertook jobs involving furniture polishing. Cops said they are now seeking help of the eyewitness­es to trace the accused.

The police refused to divulge registrati­on details of the vehiwas underway.

“We are going to scrutinise footage recorded by the CCTV cameras installed on the entire stretch of the WEH, and have also got leads on the make of the car from the eyewitness­es and Siyama. The accused is yet to surrender,” said the investigat­ing officer.

A case has been registered against the unidentifi­ed driver under section 304A (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 134 A and B of the Motor Vehicles Act for fleeing from the spot without
