TANVEER LIVED IN THE LOCALITY AND WOULD OFTEN INTERVENE TO RESOLVE THE COUPLE’S DOMESTIC DISPUTES, THE POLICE SAID. HE IS SURVIVED BY A WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN

MUMBAI: A man murdered his brother-in-law when the latter intervened to resolve a fight between the accused and his wife at their Ghatkopar home on Sunday.

The incident occurred at Punjabi chawl at Kamaraj Nagar in Ghatkopar (East), when Tanveer Kamruddin Shaikh, 34, tried to resolve a heated argument between his sister and her husband Zakir Hussain Shaikh, 40. Tanveer resided in the neighbourhood and would often intervene to resolve the couple’s domestic disputes, the police said. He is survived by his wife and three children — two daughters and a son.

“When Tanveer intervened, Zakir stabbed him in the neck with a knife,” said Rajesh Pradhan, deputy commissioner of police (Zone 7).

Though the neighbours rushed a profusely bleeding Tanveer to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. Zakir, who is currently on the run, has been booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Investigation revealed that the couple had shifted to Ghatkopar from Kurla a fortnight ago. “Zakir being an alcoholic, would often quarrel with his wife over petty issues. He did odd jobs and had the habit of picking up fights unnecessarily,” said Senior inspector Shrikant Mohite from Pant Nagar police station, adding that a manhunt has been launched to nab Zakir.
