NAVI MUMBAI COLLEGE FLOUTS NORMS, AICTE TO SHIFT STUDENTS

- Musab Qazi

MUMBAI: The apex regulatory body for engineering courses, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has decided to shift some students from a Navi Mumbai college to other institutes, after the college failed to meet the conditions laid down by the Bombay High Court (HC).

SIES Graduate School of Technology, Nerul, is one of the several engineering colleges whose student intake was reduced by AICTE after they flouted its norms. In an interim relief to colleges, the court had permitted them to admit students with some time-bound conditions.

The decision comes days after all 400 students admitted to Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Pratishthan’s (PVPP) College of Engineering, Sion, of first and second year, were to be shifted, as the Supreme Court (SC) put a conditional stay HC order allowing the college to conduct admissions for this academic year.

PVPP College is among the seven institutes in the state who were barred from admitting any student this year. After the HC granted interim relief to all these institutes, the AICTE filed Special Leave Petitions (SLPS) in SC, challenging HC orders involving four of these institutes. While the SC decided to refer the matter back to HC in the case of three of those colleges, an exception was made for PVPP College.

While the AICTE did allow SIES College to conduct admissions, it had reduced its intake by 15%. With the college failing to meet the HC conditions, around 25-30 first year students will be transferred to other colleges.

Subhash Mahajan, director, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) said that the students will be transferred after their first semester examinations.
