After experiencing record-high temperatures last week, Mumbaiites took a sigh of relief when day temperatures reached close to normal levels. On Monday, the Colaba weather station recorded 30.5 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degree Celsius above normal while 34.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at Santacruz, 3.5 degrees Celsius above normal. On Sunday, Colaba and Santacruz had recorded day temperatures of 34.5 and 36.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

Between Wednesday and Saturday, Mumbai saw recordbreaking day temperatures ever registered in the month of February as it was eight degrees Celsius above normal. Saturday was the second hottest February day in the past decade.

Officials from the weather bureau said temperatures are likely to be close to the normal mark over the next three days from Monday. “There is an active western disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir. This led to a shift in wind patterns on Mon day from warm easterly to south easterly winds to cool north to north-westerly winds,” said Shubhangi Bhute, director, the Regional Meteorological Centre India Meteorological Depart ment. “Additionally, the sea breeze set in at the right time on Monday that brought down tem peratures.”

Night temperatures were sim ilar to that of the previous day with the suburbs recording the minimum temperature close to normal levels while it was almost 3 degrees Celsius above normal at south Mumbai.

Meanwhile, pollution levels continued to be under the ‘poor category for the sixth day in a row as the air quality index was recorded at 224, which is expected to drop to 220 (poor) on Tuesday.
