After the murder, Vijay locked the door, fled to his friend’s house nearby, and told him what happened, the police said.
The friend had alerted the police who rushed to the house and arrested Vijay. He has been remanded in police custody till March 13.
M Polekar, the investigating officer at the Badlapur police station, said, “We have arrested the accused and he has confessed to the crime. We have sent the body for a post-mortem”.
According to the police, Punam, who is from Nashik, had been staying at Badlapur for the past three years. She worked for an IT company in Kanjurmarg.
Within months after meeting Vijay two years ago, Punam got into a relationship with him and they moved into a flat in Badlapur.
Deputy commissioner of police, zone 4, Sunil Bhardwaj said, “They shifted to their current flat, bought by Punam, in Badlapur Pride, six months ago. It was only recently that Punam’s parents came to know they were living together.”
According to the police, Punam also helped manage Vijay’s mobile phone shop.
“Punam had divorced from her husband around three years ago. Her parents, who live in Mumbai, came to know about the relationship and had asked Punam to return home,” said Bhardwaj.
