Ritu Rani in squad for Hockey World League Round 2

Internatio­nal hockey player Ritu Rani, who was dropped from the Rio Games squad, has made a comeback to the side for the Hockey World League Rd 2. The midfielder is among the 18-member squad announced on Thursday.

Hockey India, however, hasn’t named the captain. The competitio­n starts in West Vancouver, Canada from April 1.

The former India captain had announced retirement in September as she wasn’t picked for the Olympics. HI has included as many as nine players, including Deepika and Vandana Katariya, from the Rio squad.

Indian recently scored a 5-0 series win over Belarus in Bhopal, which Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne says, “is satisfacto­ry”.

“The Test series with Belarus helped me understand the players. We wanted to implement a couple of new things and the players were quick to respond,” he said. Besideshos­ts,theotherpa­rticipatin­g nations are Belarus, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, India and Chile.

IOC CUTS OFF FUNDING TO KENYA

The IOC has cut funding to Kenya and said Thursday it will make a decision over the country’s Olympic future at an executive board meeting next week, when the troublesom­e track and field power faces the prospect of being banned. The IOC action came after Nationa Olympic Committee of Kenya executives refused to make changes to their constituti­on.
