Brother arrested for murder of Dharavi man

A day after a 32-year-old man was shot dead at Dharavi the police arrested his younger brother for the crime. Another man who allegedly aided him was detained.

On Monday, the man was shot at a narrow lane at Dharavi. Ini tially, the police had not been able to identify him. They circulated a message on a Whatsapp group to trace the man’s family. A mem ber of the group gave the police a tip-off. They traced the family to Rajiv Gandhi Nagar at Dharavi The deceased was identified as Zia Ul Haq Hussain, who worked as a carpenter on film sets.

Police investigat­ions revealed that Zia was talking with his mother over phone when he was shot.his mother heard the gun shots. Zia’s 27-year-old brother Sana was arrested when he was about to flee the city.

“Sana boarded the Kamyan Express on Tuesday. We halted the train for 15 minutes at Kalyan railway station with help from railway authoritie­s. We searched the train and arrested Sana,” said RD Shinde, additional commis sioner of police, central region.

The police said financial dis pute seemed to be the motive but are not ruling out alleged other possibilit­ies.

The police said Sana and his accomplice, who deal in stolen mobile phones, met Zia at the nar row lane. Zia was shot on the fore head. “An eyewitness told us that it was Sana who shot Zia. The eye witness was threatened by the accused ,” said Shinde.

The two were planning to pour kerosene on the body and set it on fire but ran away after realising that it would alert people.
