IES officer held for stalking, sexually assaulting JNU girl

A 26-year-old Indian Engineering Services (IES) officer has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting, stalking, abusing and threatening to kill a Jawaharlal Nehru University student, police said on Tuesday.

“An FIR under sections 4 and 8 of protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) act and 354, 354A, 354D, 506, and 509 of IPC has been registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station,” said Chinmoy Biswal, additional deputy commissioner of police (south district).

A senior police officer said that the matter came to light on Sunday when the JNU student approached the local police and filed a complaint against the IES officer. In her complaint, an investigating officer said, the woman alleged that the accused had been sexually assaulting and harassing her since 2012, when she was still a minor. She also alleged that he had been stalking ening to outrage her modesty on public platforms. He was also allegedly threatened to kill her, police said.

“We registered a case on her complaint and asked the accused to join the probe. He claimed that he had known the woman for over six years. Even as the woman did not want to continue her friendship with him, he continued sexually harassing her,” said the officer.

In a first, the Kolkata Police will be conducting a search operation at an Enforce ment Directorate (ED) office where Manoj Kumar, the former assistant director the agency suspended on February 1, used to work .
