India pip Chile to make WL Semifinal

The Indian women’s hockey team edged past Chile 3-1 in the shootout to clinch the World League Round 2 title and qualify for the World League Semifinal here on Sunday evening.

The teams were locked in a 1-1 stalemate at the end of regulation time, but in the shootout, the experience­d Savita came up with a stunning display of goalkeepin­g to ensure India’s victory.

Savita, who was adjudged the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, was outstandin­g under the bar as she denied scoring chances to Kim Jacob and Josefa Villalabei­tia in the shootout.

Skipper Rani and Monika took India’s score to 2-0 with two successive goals in the shootout. Though Carolina Garcia scored in Chile’s third attempt, India’s Deepika converted India’s third goal to win the match.

Despite conceding an early goal in the fifth minute to Maria Maldonado the Indian women They kept Chile at bay with good defensive structure. Though India earned their first penalty corner in the 22nd minute, the effort was saved by keeper Claudia Schuler. Chile continued to stay in lead until the third quarter when Anupa Barla successful­ly converted a penalty corner in the 41st minute to equalize.

BOSCO ‘B’ SCORE

Don Bosco ‘B’ managed to pull off a narrow 23-20 win over Bombay Scottish in their opening boys under-16 match of the Don Bosco Inter-school Basketball tourna ment on Monday. Anurag Pan dey scored six points for Don Bosco, while Avirat Purohit’s 10-point efforts for Scottish went in vain.
