HC: NO CASE FOR OWN ADMISSION TEST BY DEEMED MED COLLEGES

- HT Correspondent

Maharashtra-based deemed medical institutes have no case for a separate admission process, the Bombay high court said on Wednesday.

The court said this was not possible especially because the Supreme Court, Medical Counci of India (MCI) as well as the Uni versity Grants Commission (UGC) have made the common admission process (CAP) com pulsory. The order on the peti tion is still awaited. The court was hearing a long-pending peti tion filed by deemed medical and dental institutes, seeking exemp tion from CAP.

The deemed institutes are now planning to file a separate petition against the MCI circular of March 2017, which gives the state government the right to conduct admissions to under graduate medical and denta seats in all colleges across the country.

“The deemed institutes stated that with their UGC granted sta tus, they should be allowed to conduct their own admissions However with UGC also insist ing on CAP, deemed institutes don’t have a stand anymore,” said an advocate representing parents of medical aspirants in court.

While a final order is awaited medical aspirants and parents are happy with this move by the high court.

“Not just the government even the Supreme Court in Sep tember 2016 as well as the Uni versity Grants Commission in 2017 made it very clear that al institutes, deemed or not, wil have to follow CAP. We hope the Bombay high court stands by us,” said one of the parents present at the hearing.
