Weather bureau predicts sticky days ahead for Mumbaiites

High moisture levels in the atmosphere led to a hot and sticky Wednesday. The humidity level was at 81% in south Mumbai which was 14% above normal. The level at the suburbs, however, was close to 54%.

The city saw a rise in day temperatur­es both at south Mumbai and the suburbs on Wednesday. The weather station at Colaba recorded the maximum temperatur­e of 35 degrees Celsius which was 2.8 degrees Celsius higher than normal. The suburbs too recorded a marginal increase in day temperatur­e to 34.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, which was 1.5 degree Celsius above normal.

The night temperatur­e at Colaba was 2.2 degrees Celsius above normal at 27 degrees Celsius while Santacruz recorded 24.6 degrees Celsius which was close to normal bureau said that similar conditions are likely to continue till Friday. “The humidity levels have been increasing during the evening and this is causing Mumbaiites to feel uncomforta­ble. The wind pattern is warm westerly to north-westerly winds during the day that has led to an increase in moisture absorption. During the night, however the city has been has led to a rise in night temperatur­es,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorolog­ical Department.

Meanwhile, pollution levels in the city improved from last week as the air quality index (AQI) went from the ‘poor’ to ‘moderate’ level this week. The AQI on Wednesday was 119 (moderate) and is expected to be the
