I am not your martyr’s daughter, says Gurmehar

-

Gurmehar Kaur, 20, who became the face of the antiakhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protests last month has come up with a blog outlining her stand on the issue.

She took to social networking sites to introduce her blog ‘I AM’.

The blog starts with a question ‘Who am I?’ Am I who the trolls think I am? Am I what the media portrayed me as? No, I can’t be any of that. I am my Papa’s Gulgul, I’m my father’s daughter. But. I am not your “Martyr’s Daughter”.

On Wednesday, Kaur told HT that she will write an article once a week.

Kaur, who took to social media to attack the ABVP after the clash at Ramjas College, was trolled on social media.

Kaur was sucked into the row after one of her social media posts on her father, Captain Mandeep Singh, and her perceptions about Pakistan and war surfaced. Kaur’s detractors claimed that she was a martyr’s daughter and was not supposed to make such statements.

A Congress leader and the editor-owner of a Hindi news channel were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly spreading communal hatred in the western UP town of Meerut, police said. Police said Congress leader Israt Hussain Babar was arrested in Shambal for allegedly threatening the owner of Sudarshan channel, Suresh Chavhanke, and his supporters.

Chavhanke was arrested in Lucknow for allegedly hurting religioussentimentsandpromoting enmity between religious groups through a progamme aired between April 6 and 8.

An FIR was lodged against Sudarshan’s channel under various sections of IPC including those dealing with promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth and over content to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public and other sections, Sambhal police station SHO, Brijmohan Giri said.

Provisions related to deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings have also been invoked, he said.

It was alleged that the channel had telecast a programme in which Chavhanke dished out objectionable content because of which tension prevailed in the city. The FIR was registered by the SHO when the matter was raised during a meeting of the peace committee on April 9, in which prominent citizens pointed out the programme telecast between April 6 to April 8.

When contacted for its response, the channel said that it condemned any attempt to suppress and intimidate the media.

“We condemn any act to suppress and the intimidate the media. To protest this I will reach Sambhal on April 13,” a statement issued by Chavhanke said.

He had also vowed to puja at a temple, which he claimed, was situated inside the Jama Masjid in the town. It led to communal tension in the area and additional forces were deployed to maintain peace in the town.

Meanwhile, heavy security has been deployed in the town to ensure law and order.

revenue minister EM Chandrasekharan on Wednesday came down heavily on state intelligence chief, additional DGP, BS Mohammed Yasin after he mistook him for agriculture minister Sunil Kumar.

Chandrasekharan blew his top after Yasin arrived at his official residence in the morning asked him whether he was Sunil Kumar. He even told the minister that he has taken an appointment with Sunil Kumar in the morning. He moved out after realising his mistake but not before Chandrasekharan gave him a dressing down. “It is sad a senior police officer couldn’t recognise ministers. And that too it happened to the state intelligence chief,” the minister expressed his displeasure in public.

Both ministers belong to the CPI, a partner in the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Yasin played down the incident claiming that his driver took him to the wrong house and asserted that he knew all ministers personally.
