Licences at a click, as Andheri RTO goes digital

- Kailash Korde

There will be no more long queues and fending off touts at the Andheri RTO.

Mumbai’s largest regional transport office is upgrading to a new, web-based system to register vehicles and issue driving licences. For you, this means applying for a licence, renewing vehicle permits and paying the fee can all be done online, from your home.

On April 5, the Andheri RTO moved to the Sarathi 4.0 system, which is used to register vehicles. Next week, it will start using Vahan 4.0

The systems have been developed by the National Informatics Centre. While Vahan 4.0 allows vehicle dealers to register vehicles at their outlets, Sarathi 4.0 lets users book appointments online upload

“We have asked people to upload the listed documents correctly on the system to avoid a last-minute cancellation of their appointment,” said a senior RTO official.

To transfer data from the old systems to the upgraded ones, sources said the RTO will not register vehicles for three days, starting April 15.

“We will resume vehicle registration on April 19,” said a source.

Andheri is the first RTO in Mumbai to implement both systems at once. The Tardeo RTO has still not installed the updated Sarathi system, but started using Vahan 4.0 last year. The Wadala RTO has both systems, but relies on a limited version of Vahan that caters only to private vehicles. The Borivli RTO is yet to implement either system registered every day in the western suburbs — the largest number in the city and sources ensure the process is quick anf free of corruption.
