Mumbaiites will no longer have to watch out for bustling traffic while they try to click a photo of the city’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday unveiled a viewing gallery constructed in front of CST for people to click photos of the historical site without putting their lives in jeopardy.

It was built at a cost of Rs90 lakh.

Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner of A ward, said, “Citizens can now click pictures of the iconic BMC building, CST and Capitol cinema from the viewing gallery without any hassles.”

He added that since the entrance of the gallery is from the civic headquarters side, BMC was planning to end the free left to JJ flyover for the safety of citizens.

The gallery has been constructed above a ventilation shaft of a pedestrian subway, which now has ventilation.

It was inaugurated by Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray. He said, “It is a beautiful spot which help in increasing the city’s revenue by attracting tourists.”

The five-foot-high gallery was built with stones brought from Jaisalmer to match the heritage-look of the BMC headquarter and CST. It has the space to hold 35 people at a time, said a BMC official.

The civic body has also surrounded the triangular gallery with a glass and metal fence to prevent people from falling off it while clicking selfies, added the official.

Built in 1888 and a UNESCO world-heritagestructure, CST is one the most photographed monuments in Mumbai.

BMC came up with the idea of a gallery after they saw people taking photos of the structure while standing on the road amid heavy traffic.
