Net needed around bridge, say cops

- Jayprakash S Naidu

More safety measures like a net around the U bridge are needed to ensure that bikers who hit the boundary wall do not fall off the bridge, said the Bandra police and the Bandra traffic police.

Multiple fatal accidents have occurred where bikers fall off the bridge after crashing into the wall.

Last year, HT as part of its series on road accidents had highlighted the bridge as one of the major accident-prone spots in the western suburbs.

Senior police inspector, Pandit Thakare, said, “Last year, we had written to the government, asking them to take appropriate action. There is a need for a safety net or some kind of preventive measure. They did take a few measures like signboards and bright lights.”

Echoing the same, senior police inspector of Bandra traffic police division, Machindra Bodke said, “We had written to multiple government departments to take preventive measures. They cannot put speed breakers as it is not conducive. This accident has occurred after a considerable amount of time, but it shows that it is still an accident-prone spot. However, the youth who died was speeding.”

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) looks after the bridge. A MSRDC spokesperson told HT, “Adequate measures have been taken after getting suggestions from Mumbai traffic police.”
