A 28-year-old Ola cabbie was arrested more than two weeks after he allegedly ran over one Datta Dhanke, a 50-year-old autorickshaw driver, with his car at Bandra east and fled without helping him. Dhanke died of head injuries.

The Bandra-kurla Complex police solved the case with the help of CCTV footage from the area but said it was impossible to find out if the cabbie — Abdul Amir Adib Anwar Hashmi — was drunk. The incident occurred on April 1 and Hashmi was arrested on April 18. A police official said, “We managed to arrest him but now we cannot find out if he was drunk at the time of the incident.”

According to the police, on April 1, around 4.30 pm on CST Road near Nafa bus stop, Hashmi was driving fast from Kurla towards the University of Mumbai in his Maruti Dzire. Dhanke was pushing his autorickshaw when Hashmi’s car hit him. Although, passers-by rushed to help Dhanke, Hashmi fled the spot. The autorickshaw driver was admitted to VN Desai hospital where he was declared dead.

The BKC police had registered a case against an unidentified driver under section 279 and 304 A of IPC for rash and negligent driving causing death. They also charged him under the Motor Vehicles Act for fleeing without helping the victim.

After scanning several CCTV footages on the entire stretch, the police spotted a car being rashly driver at the crime spot around the time of the accident. The cops traced the car and found that the owner Manoj Rajak had given it to one Afsar Khan who had given the car to Hashmi.
