Woman sets herself on fire, dies

SUNITA ALLEGEDLY SET HERSELF ON FIRE IN THE KITCHEN WHILE HER PARTNER WAS SITTING IN THE HALL OF THEIR 3BHK APARTMENT

A woman died after she allegedly set herself on fire at her flat in Andheri (West). The DN Nagar police have filed an accidental death report.

According to the police, Sunita Hasam,32, was in a live-in relationsh­ip with Vinod Shetty, a resident of Andheri. The police said the incident took place on Thursday around 8.30 pm.

Shetty had returned home from work around 8pm and was sitting in the hall of his 3-BHK apartment while the woman was in the kitchen, said police.

According to the police, the woman went to the kitchen and set herself on fire. After seeing smoke coming from the kitchen, Shetty tried to enter, but was unable to get in, the police said. Shetty called for help and the fire brigade and the local police were alerted.

Sunita had known Shetty for 17 years and had been living with him since 2005, the police said. “We are looking into why the woman may have killed herself. At this juncture, we can only say that she died due to burn injuries. We are trying to find out if she had a dispute with anyone,” said Dhanaji Nalwade senior inspector at DN Nagar police station.

The woman also took care of Shetty’s ailing mother,who passed away in January, the police said.

The officers are now record ing the statements of her rela tives, including her aunt and two sisters. Before moving in with Shett, Sunita lived before moving in with Shetty. Her two sisters are married. Her partner is not being considered a sus pect.

The police said they are investigat­ing if there was any foul play involved. They have not found anything suspicious said an officer.
