An assistant commissioner of police, earlier arrested for allegedly killing his stepson, but who managed to escape from the sessions court last month, was caught and arrested again on Friday night.

The suspended ACP, Shivaji Naravne, escaped from the court on March 22. He was caught after the police got a tipoff that he will be visiting his mother in Kurla. Senior police inspector Pramod Khoparde from the Nehru Nagar police station said, “Our staff got a tipoff the accused is likely to come to meet his mother in Kurla. We laid a trap and caught him.”

A case under section 224 — resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension — has now been registered with the Colaba police station, as he ran away from the sessions court there. The ACP was handed over to Colaba police.

In October 2013, Naravne was arrested after Rohan Jogade’s mother claimed her son was last with the officer. The victim’s mother Nanda said she suspected Naravne as he had called her at 4am on the day of the murder and told her more. The police said Rohan and his mother constantly argued as he wanted an apartment to be transferred to his name and demanded another Rs10 lakh to start a business.

The police said the ACP served Rohan drinks and then slit his throat. “Last month, when he being brought to the court for a routine court date, the ACP managed to escape in the crowd. Even the officials escorting him were casual as they assumed that being a police official, he would behave,” said an officer from the Colaba police station.
