National-level netball player Shumayla Javed has demanded a ban on triple talaq, saying it ruined her life barely two years after her marriage.

Shumayla, who lives with her parents in Peerzada locality of Amroha, was divorced two years after her marriage for giving birth to a girl child.

She believes that ‘triple talaq’ is a social evil in Muslim community which should be eradicated to provide a better life to Muslim women.

She has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, demanding justice for victims of triple talaq.

Shumayla got married to Farooq Ali of Lucknow in February 2014.

She claimed that a few months after the marriage, they started demanding money and tortured her. She gave birth to a daughter in May 2015, after which life became tough for her. Eventually, Shumayla’s husband divorced her in April 2016 and since then she has been living with her parents in Amroha.

Shumayla has three sisters and a brother. She works in an office as a data entry operator to earn her livelihood.

She alleged that the police refused to lodge her FIR but now in a changed atmosphere, she is hopeful of getting justice.

Prior to her, Mariam and Shaheen of the city also have raised their voice against triple talaq and demanded that the practice be abolished immediately.

The MLA of Amroha and former minister Mehboob Ali said he would extend all possible help to the player in her battle for justice.
