Cops: Kamothe family in deep financial crisis before suicide

- Pranab Jyoti Bhuyan

Financial crisis was one of the main reasons why three members of a family committed suicide in their Kamothe flat, the police said on Monday.

The 50-year-old husband, Indrajeet Dutta, who claimed to be an engineer, was jobless for around seven years, but would drink a lot. The police have recovered several liquor bottles from the house.

The wife, Dr Jamine Patel, had to take care of the family by running a clinic near her house. But she was unable to go because of her ill health.

She had mostly kept it shut this year because she was suffering from severe body pain, the police said.

PS Bhatuse, police sub inspector from Kamothe police station, said, “The family was unable to pay the rent of clinic and the flat they lived in. The clinic’s rent was Rs10,000 a month. As they had not been paying for a long time, the total amount had gone up to Rs2 lakh. The owner of clinic who is an eye specialist, however, did not harass them for the rent.”

“Their house rent was Rs14,500 and they were not paying that for the past three months. They had asked to deduct the money from the security deposit of Rs50,000. Their agreement expired on March 31, but they had requested the owner to extend it to April 15. They had also not paid the domestic help for four months,” he said. Ravindra Srinivash Shetyam, the chairman of the society, said the house owner had served them a notice asking to vacate the house on April 1.

“However, through mutual understanding, it was first extended to April 15 and then to April 25,” he said.
