- Pranab Jyoti Bhuyan

The Navi Mumbai police busted a gang of alleged cheats who duped people of Rs56 lakh by asking them to invest money promising heavy returns and arrested 18 people.

The accused had organised a seminar at the Bunts Center at Juinagar on Sunday to ask people to invest Rs 11,900 each to get returns in lakhs.

Their presentation included video clips of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Microsoft’s Bill Gates talking about digital India and investments. Around 500 people from different parts of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai attended the event.

After receiving a tip off, the police reached the spot and arrested the 18 organisers whe they failed to show any registration certificate to support their claims.

Hemant Nagrale, Navi Mumbai police commissioner said, “The scamsters would lure people to the networking scheme promising huge returns if they invested in the cryptocurrency known as One Coin. They falsely told the investors that 1 Bitcoin which was available for Rs 6 is now Rs 80,000. Similarly One Coin will also multiply in cost after two to three years and the investors will be billionaires.”

The accused also introduced a multi-level networking scheme of earning commissions by making new investors. Nagrale said, “It’s a multi-level investment scam and is worth Rs56 lakh but is likely to be multi-city fraud going in crores.”

A case has been registered at Nerul police station and so far 18 people have been arrested.”

Dilip Sawant, deputy commissioner of police (crime) said. “So far we have learnt that they operated in different cities of Maharashtra. But we think, they have cheated people in the entire country. The arrested accused are now in police custody.”
