‘College did not let us change subjects’

Students are finding it difficult to change subjects in the second year of junior college (Class 12) as the state education department has insisted on online admissions.

Around 50 students pursuing science from Ruia College, Matunga, met education minister Vinod Tawde on Monday complainin­g that the college did not allow them to switch from mathematic­s to psychology in Class 12.

Students said that during Class 11 admissions last year, the college had assured them that they would be able to drop math and opt for psychology in class 12. But few months ago, they were told that they cannot

“After we insisted, only 30 students were allowed to choose psychology. We do not know what criteria they were selected on,” said a student.

However, the college explained that they do not have room to accommodat­e all 50 students for psychology. “The students had opted for math in Class 11. After studying the subject for a year, they probably found it tough and so want to change to psychology,” said Suhas Pednekar, college principal.

While switching subjects is usually permitted, Pednekar said that this year they cannot exceed their intake for each subject because Class 12 admissions have to be done online.
