Kota student fails to qualify for JEE Mains, kills himself

A day after the JEE Mains, 2017, results were declared, a student from West Bengal committed suicide in Kota on Friday after he failed to qualify for the exam.

Kota city police said Arijit Pramanick from 24 Parganas region of West Bengal hanged himself in his hostel room in Mahaveer Nagar area. Police received informatio­n about the incident from the hostel owners.

Circle inspector of Mahaveer Nagar police station, Kota City, Pramod Sharma said the student was living in the hostel for the past one year and was taking coaching from an institute in the city. Sharma said though no suicide note was recovered, failure to qualify for the exam appears to be the reason.

He said the boy’s parents were scheduled to arrive in Kota to pick up their son since he had failed to qualify for the exam.

The crime branch of the Delhi police arrested a hawala operator on Friday morning for allegedly transferri­ng money for AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran in an alleged bribery case.

Naresh alias Nathu Singh was held for transferri­ng around ₹1 crore from Dinakaran to middleman Sukesh Chandrashe­khar via hawala channels. Naresh was produced in a city court and remanded to two-day police custody. An investigat­ing officer said Naresh, a Chandni Chowk resident is Chandrashe­khar’s friend ala money in the past. Police said they will interrogat­e Naresh to identify other accused.

Delhi police arrested Dinakaran and his aide Mallikarju­n for allegedly paying middleman Chandrashe­khar to get the leaves symbol by allegedly bribing election officials. Police have not identified any election official who was in touch with Chandrashe­khar or Dinakaran.

Police had recovered ₹1.30 crore in cash from Chandrashe­khar’s room in a five-star hotel. He had allegedly assured Dinakaran that he would bribe election officials and get a favourable decision in his favour.

In a one-of-its-kind com plaint, an Agra girl has alleged that she was “forced” to join a Whatsapp group and read objec tionable religious posts.

Acting on the complaint police have registered a case against the administra­tor of the group, who is yet to be identified and a few other members. “The case has been registered under section 153 (for hurting religious sentiments), IPC 294 (obscene comments made to girl) and Sec tion 67 of Informatio­n Technol ogy Act,” said Ajay Kumar, sen ior sub-inspector, Loha Mand police station.

He said the team will seek assistance of the cyber cell to investigat­e the case and book the accused.

The complainan­t is a research scholar at Dr Bhim Rao Ambed kar University of Agra. She alleged that she was made mem ber of a group by some unknown number on April 13. She left the group several times and kept get ting added back to it. The admin istrator and other members began posting objectiona­ble reli gious comments.

The complainan­t, who is from the minority community objected to the same but group members abused and threatened her.
